Saint Joseph and France today: a different analysis of the situation

A case of déjà vu or something completely new?
Like me, you’re trying to make sense of it all… I was in Lyon city centre whilst the rioters were operating with complete impunity. Emerging from the quiet, peaceful library, having anticipated nothing, I found myself in scenes straight out of a distopia: onlookers like me didn’t realise the danger, and a sort of unintentional, good-natured tourism rubbed shoulders with guerrilla-style violence. I had to cross the whole of the city centre to get home: bridges closed, the acrid smell of tear gas, groups of hooded youths all dressed in tight-fitting black (had they even been briefed on what practical outfit to wear?), some carrying baseball bats… I can still vividly recall the fleeting image of a young man with his thief's bag. Blank, without a guilty conscience, and even without excitement, his expression was as zombie-like as the rest. In days gone by, the French Revolution produced violent individuals in search of freedom and power. Not shoes...

A tactic from the World Trade Centre attacks adapted for Europe?
Since then, I’ve realised that citizens have been taken hostage, not on flights, but on the streets: in Paris, Lyon or Milan, and in many other shopping centres, with static law enforcement forces confronted by hyper-mobile, manipulated groups.
A tactic from the World Trade Centre attacks adapted for Europe?
Since then, I’ve realised that citizens had been taken hostage, not on aeroplanes but on the streets: in Paris, Lyon or Milan, and in many other ‘commercial’ centres, with static law enforcement forces pitted against hyper-mobile, manipulated troops – why static? Because citizens wander right in the middle of the battlefield and might be caught in the battle. Is all this terrorist training?
What can be done? The creativity revolution
I returned home in shock. When the Pope comes, a million people don’t cause any trouble; but when it’s… actually, who?
I’m not quite sure what to do. I’ll start with my own small circle: supporting local associations that educate and guide young people with love. In France, they no longer receive subsidies. Is this another form of theft, an invisible braking of the nation this time?
Creativity:

This is where Saint Joseph comes in. His revolution is the ‘Tekton’ revolution – and it is not a technological one. The ancient greek word that defines him means far more than simply a carpenter or a handyman. He is the architect, the master builder who has the overall vision for the reconstruction, as in the Book of Nehemiah quoted by Pope Leo in Magnifica Humanitas.
Anyone who creates, builds, renovates, prays, devises beauty, crafts, repairs, paints, welcomes, teaches, invents, draws up concrete plans or plans for the future, connects people and offers encouragement: that is what it means to be a ‘tekton’ today. There are many of them in France – a whole army of ‘Saint Josephs’, often equipped with Dremels and multifunctional tools (I’ve got mine for fixing everything!), books, practical skills, and networks of friends and charitable organisations; they are the antidote. I pray for these builders who are both effective and creative!
